Description
NOW® L-Glutamine Powder is a glutamine supplement in its free form.
Although this amino acid is produced by the body, it can be utilised in certain circumstances in greater quantities than endogenously produced and is therefore often referred to as ‘conditionally essential’. In addition to its great demand as an anabolic agent, glutamine has been associated with immune function, as it has been shown to mediate the proliferation and phagocytic action of defence cells, especially lymphocytes.
By intervening in the production of GABA, deficits of this amino acid can jeopardise the nervous system.
Its main functions in sports:
- Muscle volumisation based on increased cell density, rather than on water retention in the muscle.
- Prevents muscle degradation by increasing glycogen levels
- Promotes anti-catabolic processes (recovery from intense wear and tear)
- Maintains acid/base balance and reduces symptoms of OTS (overtraining syndrome)
- Encourages protein synthesis
Glutamine also plays a fundamental role in intestinal health and function:
- As an energy source for intestinal cells: Glutamine is the main source of fuel for the cells lining the intestine. These cells use glutamine to produce the energy needed to maintain their vital functions, including the absorption of nutrients and the renewal of the intestinal lining.
- For maintaining the intestinal barrier: Glutamine helps strengthen the intestinal barrier, which is essential for protecting the body from pathogens and toxins while allowing the absorption of essential nutrients, preventing conditions such as intestinal hyperpermeability, where harmful substances can enter the bloodstream.
- Supporting the immune system: Providing energy and nutrients needed by the cells of this system in the intestine, helping to maintain local and general immunity.
- Reducing inflammation: Glutamine can help reduce inflammation in the intestine, promoting a healthier environment and aiding recovery from inflammation and intestinal injuries.
- Promotes regeneration and repair: After damage or stress spikes, or even wear and tear caused by aggressive medical treatments (chemotherapy, radiotherapy) or infections, glutamine is vital for the regeneration and repair of intestinal tissue. It promotes cell proliferation and can speed up the healing process of the intestinal lining.
